A beekeeper is a person who manages bees in the process to get honey, wax, and other products from them like, royal jelly and pollen, also providing pollination services to the crops. The beekeepers work continually of planning and operating a bee farm, caring and breeding bees and their queen, monitoring the health of the colony, as well as giving food and shelter to the bees.
Most beekeepers mostly dedicate their time to the care and operation of their bee colonies. This also means the frequent checking up of hives for the presence of diseases or pests such as varroa mites, the giving of necessary drugs to keep the bees healthy, and the making sure that the queen is fertile and laying eggs so that the colony has a large number of bees. Moreover beekeepers are involved in building, servicing, and repairing hives and other tools.
In the beekeeping industry, which is a profitable business, beekeepers take charge of the economic side. They do the harvesting, processing, packaging, and promotion of products like honey and wax. One of the main functions of a commercial beekeeper is to move the hives from one area to another, usually to different agricultural locations where the pollination of fruits, vegetables, or seeds can take place, which is necessary for the production of food.
Such work is hands-on and demands the worker to have excellent knowledge of the biology and behavior of bees. The physical aspects of the job can be tough as there is a need to carry heavy hive boxes and work is done outside in different weather conditions. Beekeepers should be good at time management so that they will have enough time for the inspections, treatments, and honey collection which is also a way to guarantee success and productivity in their operations.
