A cartographer is a person who works as a professional map creator. They use geographical data to create, prepare and update maps, charts, plans and other visual representations of different geographical features. This job needs a proper knowledge of spatial information and ability to explain and understand geographic data. Cartographers can work in different sectors, government agencies, research institutions and private firms. They also design digital maps that can be accessed by people from their smartphones. It shows that people can depend on cartographers for their safe travel and accuracy.
The cartographer is responsible for gathering data to make detailed geographic maps. Their works have multiple duties like, creating good visual representations of data, such as annual rainfall patterns. They review, collect, and connect geographic data from satellite images, reports, surveys, and aerial photographs. They make digital maps for educational, academic, political, commercial, and environmental purposes and also modify, update, modify, or improve existing maps with new information. They collect and examine data, such as population density and demographics, using data collected from geodetic surveys and remote sensing systems.
A cartographer can work in different environments, just like they do different kinds of mapping such as topographic maps or navigation charts. They spend most of the time in the office and fields during that time they create maps. It is not a big deal for cartographers to travel to the locations on their own because it's easy for them, as they create maps to help them understand the topography of the land. However, some cartographers act as contractors, as they give their 40 hours per week for a single organization and sometimes add additional hours for fieldwork.
