A land economist is a person who works to check, manage and improve the use of land resources. They use their knowledge in economics and the property market to figure out the land value, possible uses, and economic viability. Their work contributes to the decision-making of property development, investment and policy-making. This profession demands a deep understanding of economic principles, property law and environmental elements. As a Land Economist, one can work in different sectors like government, real estate and consultancy.
Their duties include, checking the economic viability of land use, providing guidance on the economic elements that affects the land and property development, doing research on land and property market conditions, preparing reports and forecasts on land and property economics, give advise on the economic impact of environmental changes and public regulations on land use, calculate economic and statistical data related to land use and creating economic policies and plans relating to land use. They also provide consultation services on land and property development projects.
Land Economists have command in property sectors like industrial, commercial, rural and retail, or in property research or property investment analysis. They think about the economic effects of land use policies and strategies and do feasibility studies for land development projects. They also advise on the economic feasibility of land conservation and land management projects. Moreover, they study the economic impact of taxation, interest rates and other economic factors on land and property markets. Land Economists have a primary focus on valuations, property management, urban and regional planning and design would not be regarded as relevant to the occupation of Land Economist.

Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with a bachelor degree or higher qualification. In some examples, relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification ANZSCO Skill Level 1. Registration or licensing may be necessary. Land Economics is the study of economic principles applicable to the use of land. Other closely related majors such as Property or Real Estate may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Degrees with general Economics units without subjects in Property/Land Economics/Valuation would not be assessed positively. This includes qualifications assessed at AQF Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level.

A minimum of 1 year of relevant employment is required. In addition to at least one year of highly relevant employment within the last five years before application.
