The construction estimator is engaged to prepare and present a calculated cost plan to construction projects up to the settlement of the tender. Their day-to-day work is to calculate the cost of a specific project offered, research prices and receive quotations of suppliers and subcontractors, observe inflation and exchange rates, and check the needs of the clients. They also make preparations for work, control projects so that the cost is not exceeded, draw up detailed and exact price lists of all that is required in the construction project and take into account the risk assessment and health and safety considerations.

The estimators should be knowledgeable of all other technologies, processes, and materials, proficient in project management systems and digital tools. These are necessary skills to carry out right constructions, takeoffs and cost analysis. At least three years of relevant experience may be required in place of the formal qualifications listed above. In some cases, relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to formal qualifications. This includes qualifications assessed at the AQF Advanced Diploma, Associate Degree, Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral levels. Registration or licensing may be required.

Tasks Include:

Calculating costs and estimating time scales;
Consulting with clients, vendors, personnel in other departments or construction foremen to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues;

Preparing estimates for use in selecting vendors or subcontractors;
Conferring with engineers, architects, owners, contractors and subcontractors on changes and adjustments to cost estimates;
Preparing estimates used by management for purposes such as planning, organising, and scheduling work;
Preparing cost and expenditure statements and other necessary documentation at regular intervals for the duration of the project;
Assessing cost effectiveness of products, projects or services, tracking actual costs relative to bids as the project develops;
Setting up cost monitoring and reporting systems and procedures;
Conducting special studies to develop and establish standard hour and related cost data or to effect cost reduction;
Interpreting building plans, building regulations and codes of practice.
