A hydrographer is someone who works as an analyst of water, rivers, lakes, stormwater and sewage. They check the quality and flow of water and do surveys and maps of oceans, seas and rivers. A hydrographic surveyor, or hydrographer, uses specialised tools to formulate thorough plans of harbours, seabed's and other structures for different purposes. They do this by mapping the ocean floor, making a model of the tide, depth and ocean topography. Hydrographers usually carry out this work from oil rigs and survey vessels, the latter being ships that have their own unique tools to help conduct hydrography.
Hydrographers sometimes work closely with other experts like civil engineers and ecologists. This means they're supposed to work well in a team and they may even lead a hydrographic survey team. It can be important for hydrographers to have typical teamwork skills. For instance, communicating on a daily basis can help employees with different expertise build trust in each other's competencies. You may not always work in a team as a hydrographer, but it's a good idea to prepare for the possibility.
Apart from the way a hydrographer collects their data, they usually present it in some form. To do this, they might make use of software that automatically models data in the right format, or they may gather that information themselves. The capability to read and explain hydrographic data can be important, but being able to transform it into a format that others, mainly non-experts, can understand is also very important. The point of an overall hydrographic survey is to give results for people to act upon, so it's important for hydrographers to communicate every major finding.

A minimum of three years of relevant experience may cover the formal qualifications listed above. This profession needs a qualification assessed as comparable to the education level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma or higher and in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation.
